Pillar three

You're still in there. Even if you can't feel it yet.

For anyone coming out of a hard period, whatever it was, and quietly wondering who they are now. Not who you were before. Not who someone wanted you to be. Who you actually are.

What it feels like

When you've lost track of yourself

It rarely happens in one moment. It happens a little at a time, while you're busy getting through.

  • Someone asks what you like to do, and you genuinely don't know what to say.
  • Your days are full, but very little in them was chosen by you.
  • You've adapted so long to someone or something that you can't tell where it ends and you begin.
  • The things that used to light you up now feel like they belong to someone else.
  • You're out of the storm, and the quiet is somehow harder than the noise.
The honest part

Rebuilding yourself is not going back. The person you were before this season doesn't exist anymore, and that's not a loss. You know things now they didn't.

Finding yourself isn't a weekend retreat or one big realisation. It's slower and more ordinary than that. You try something. You notice how it feels. You keep what's yours and let go of what isn't.

You're not starting from zero. You're starting from experience.

Five questions to come back to

Start here. Answer honestly.

Write the answers down. Not for anyone else. Come back to them in a month and see what's changed.

  1. What did I stop doing that I used to love?

Not because you lost interest, but because there was no room for it anymore. Make a list. Pick one. Do it this week, badly if needed.

  2. Which of my opinions are actually mine?

After long enough, you start adopting views to keep the peace. Notice the next time you say "I think". Ask whether you really do.

  3. Who do I feel most like myself around?

There's usually one or two people. Maybe you lost touch. Send a message today. It doesn't have to be a big conversation.

  4. What do I want my ordinary Tuesday to look like?

Forget the dream life. Design one normal day you'd be glad to live. Then find one piece of it you can have this week.

  5. What am I no longer willing to accept?

Your boundaries are part of who you are. Write down three things you won't go back to. That list is part of your identity now.

Short reads

For the in-between

Identity

You were never just one role.

Partner, parent, employee, the strong one, the one who holds it together. When a role ends or changes, it can feel like you disappeared with it.

You didn't. The role was something you did. It was never all of who you are.

Underneath every role, there's still a person. Get to know them again.

Quiet

Learn to sit in the silence.

After a loud season, silence can feel threatening. So you fill it. Scrolling, noise, busyness, other people's problems.

Try ten minutes with nothing. No phone, no podcast. It'll feel uncomfortable at first. That discomfort is where you start hearing your own thoughts again.

Your own voice is quiet at first. Give it room.

Self-perception

Trust your read on things again.

If you spent a long time being told you remembered it wrong, or overreacted, or misunderstood, your instincts went quiet. They're not gone.

Start small. Notice a feeling and don't argue with it. "I don't like this." That's enough. You don't need a reason or a vote.

Your gut was right more often than you were allowed to believe.

Pace

Slow is not the same as stuck.

Some weeks you'll feel like you're flying. Other weeks you'll feel like you're right back at the start. Both are part of it.

Healing isn't a straight line, and becoming yourself again isn't either. Look at the direction, not the speed.

You're allowed to take as long as it takes.
